VC-CWA has provided college scholarships to local agriculture students for years - and always has fun doing so! After two years with no Ventura County Fair, it was great to be able to return, and even better to recognize these outstanding local students on the stage at the Agriculture Building. Thank you, Ed Williams, Ventura County Agricultural Commissioner for serving as our 2022 scholarship presenter. |
More about our 2022 Scholarship winners...
Topa Topa Flywheelers has been a favorite exhibitor at CWA’s Farm Day for at least 20 years. It's always a pleasure to award a special scholarship in their honor. This year's Topa Topa Flywheelers scholarship recipient is Allison Reiman. Allison represents the sixth generation of a Ventura County farming family, and plans to follow in her parents’ footsteps at Cal Poly, SLO, after which she hopes to attend veterinary school. She has been very active in Santa Rosa Valley 4-H, where she raised swine, steers, dairy goats, rabbits and chickens. |
Julissa Ortega Valencia received the 2022 Carolyn Leavens Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of Carolyn Leavens (1930-2011), a key player in the beginnings of Ventura County CWA, former CWA State President and former President of American Agri-Women. This award is given each year to a student with long-term ties to local agriculture. Julissa spent four years at Santa Paula High School being very active in FFA taking on leadership roles. She received the State FFA Degree, which is the highest level of achievement in a local FFA Chapter. She has raised four market hogs for the Ventura County Fair. She will attend Ventura College for two years and pursue an Agriculture Business and GE Certification. Then she plans to transfer to Cal Poly SLO and major in Ag Business. Finally, she wants to work with her father to grow their farm labor service into farm management or manage her own farm. She was unable to join us for the formal scholarship presentation because of a prior Fair commitment with her pig. |
In 2022, VC-CWA awarded 3 General Agriculture Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate potential for tremendous impact in Ventura County Agriculture.
Congratulations, Sam Hoyt, for receiving a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Sam will be a Junior in the Fall at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, majoring in Agricultural Science with a minor in Agricultural Business. He plans on working in the field of food safety and PCA work once he finishes school and even starting his own business in the citrus industry. His passion for agriculture began at 8 years old, when he joined 4-H and raised lambs, chickens and turkeys. He maintains a high GPA while being heavily involved in the Cal Poly SLO Western Bonanza Junior Livestock Show and working as the manager of the sheep and goat department.
Andrew Arroyo is a real go-getter, and also receives a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Andrew discovered his passion for agriculture when he joined FFA at Santa Paula High School. He got involved every way he could, including public speaking competitions, leadership conferences, raising livestock and serving on the FFA officer tear. He is attending Cal Poly SLO and majoring in Agribusiness with a minor in Fruit Science. After graduating, he plans to return to Ventura County and farm with his father. |
CWA’s Agricultural Family scholarship is awarded each year to a student whose parents work in Ventura County Agriculture. For the second consecutive year, this year's winner is Enrique Rodriguez. Enrique is a student at California State University Chico where he is majoring in Agriculture Education with an emphasis in Agriculture Mechanics and hopes to get into the masters program at Chico. During this past year at CSU Chico, he was able to take part in Agriculture Ambassadors, where he gave talks about the agriculture program and how students can get involved. He is also currently working with the college of agriculture as an advising intern for students who have questions or concerns about the program. After graduating, Enrique wants to give back to his community by returning to his local high school and teach there. Congratulations, Travis Smith, on receiving a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Travis has been a part of Ventura County agriculture as long as he can remember. He spent years being very active in 4-H, and also belongs to California High School Rodeo Association, doing team roping, calf roping, and cutting. Competition in the Roping events at the Fair prevented Travis from joining us during the scholarship presentation in the Ag Building. He plans to attend Cal Poly, and study Ag Business with a focus on International Trade. |
