More about our 2021 Scholarship winners...
Topa Topa Flywheelers has been a favorite exhibitor at CWA’s Farm Day for the past 19 years. It's always a pleasure to award a special scholarship in their honor and we are so grateful that Bob Rich was able to join us at the reception. This year's Topa Topa Flywheelers scholarship recipient is Sam Hoyt. Sam graduated from Rio Mesa High School and spent most of his younger years in 4-H holding a wide variety of leadership positions and completing numerous projects. He is beginning his second year at Cal Poly SLO, studying Animal Science. |
Katie Cook received the 2021 Carolyn Leavens Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is named in honor of Carolyn Leavens (1930-2011), a key player in the beginnings of Ventura County CWA, former CWA State President, former President of American Agri-Women, and California Legislature Woman of the Year in 1988. This award is given each year to a student with long-term ties to local agriculture. Katie's long-term commitment to agriculture and agriculture education includes her almost life-long career in Ventura County 4-H where she exhibited large and small livestock, participated in numerous other projects, and served her chapter, the county, and other chapters in a wide variety of leadership and educational roles. She will attend Colorado State, studying Animal Science with plans to become a veterinarian.

In 2021, VC-CWA awarded 3 General Agriculture Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who demonstrate potential for tremendous impact in Ventura County Agriculture.
Congratulations, Citlalli Veloz, for receiving a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Citlalli graduated from Santa Paula High School and was an active participant in Santa Paula FFA. She attends Fresno State, studying Agriculture Education, and where she also works for the USDA in their Water Management Research lab as a biological research technician. She looks forward to becoming an Agriculture Teacher where she will be able to share her love for agriculture encourage the next generation. Andrew Arroyo is a real go-getter, and also receives a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Andrew graduated from Santa Paula High School, served at all levels of FFA and received numerous FFA awards at the local and state level. He now attends Cal Poly SLO studying Ag Business. His father, who came to this country years ago to work in the fields, had hoped his son would avoid agriculture and become a doctor or lawyer. Now, after watching his son succeed in school and work as a student intern in the Ventura County Agricultural Commissioners office, dad is so proud to see his son planning a future farming together with him here in Ventura County. |
CWA’s Agricultural Family scholarship is awarded each year to a student whose parents work in Ventura County Agriculture. This year's winner is Enrique Rodriguez. He graduated from Santa Paula High School where he was an active member in Santa Paula FFA. He has finished his first years of study at Ventura College, completing degrees in Ag Business and Plant Science, and now is headed to Chico State to major in Agricultural Business.
Congratulations, Fatima Saucedo, on receiving a VC-CWA General Agriculture Scholarship. Fatima graduated from Santa Paula High School and was very active in Santa Paula FFA. She is headed to Cal Poly SLO to study Agriculture Business. She will be the first in her family to attend a 4-year university. Her application essay so clearly communicated what many of us took years to really grasp: “we need to be able to find ways to produce our food locally, educate the public of the importance of buying local, supporting our local farmers making healthy choices, and make it a vital importance to sustain our agriculture industry and provide the best quality food to the consumer.” Well said, Fatima. |
